Light itself predominates my painting. Light, along with my imagination, illumines and reveals the inherent beauty of the simplest forms. The fall of light upon an object at a given moment accentuates it's presence with shadow and highlight, transforming it from ordinary to extraordinary, becoming an event of light: dramatic, wonderful, a lavish array of tactile details, form, and color. |

I know I am going to paint an object when, by virtue of the play of light, it transcends mere physical form and utilitarian purpose. It is no longer an object by name (vase, rose, cloth, wood) - it becomes charmed by the quality of it's own unique presence. In a snap of indifference, however, it can retreat from that magical summit to a bland, nondescript, uneventful ordinariness. My paintings embrace the significance of an ordinary thing in an extraordinary moment.
